Wat Mongkhon Bophit

Ayutthaya Historical
City Tour

A very large Buddha image is enshrined. It is a bronze Buddha image in the posture of Maravichai. This reflects the power of religious beliefs that cannot be separated from social and political ideals. It is also a testimony to the knowledge of metal science and the ability to cast metal, especially bronze, which was one of the most important metals in the Ayutthaya period. As for the area next to Phra Mongkhon Bophit Temple on the east side, it was originally Sanam Luang. It was used as a place to build the royal crematorium for the king and royal family, similar to Bangkok’s Sanam Luang.
